1David W. Lieberman1, alias Hank Mann, est né à New York le 28 mai 1887. Il débute sans doute dans le vaudeville – on dit même qu’il fut acrobate, spécialiste du trapèze volant – avant d’être peintre d’enseignes pour le tabac Bull Durham. Tout en travaillant, perché sur une échelle dans une rue, il assiste au tournage d’une comédie de la Biograph. Il se sent alors attiré par le cinéma et entre dans l’équipe de Mack Sennett en 1912. Rebaptisé Hank Mann, il fait partie de la fameuse troupe des Keystone Cops où ses qualités de gymnaste lui confèrent une place toute particulière : il se spécialise dans les acrobaties dangereuses (échelles, toits, voitures en marche, etc.). En 1914, il quitte Sennett en compagnie de Ford Sterling et d’Henry Lehrman, puis revient à la Keystone pour rejoindre ensuite la L-KO où il tourne en compagnie de Billy Ritchie, un des imitateurs de Chaplin. Il revient encore à la Keystone en 1916, puis, en 1917, passe à la Fox (Sunshine Comedies) où il a pour partenaire Vernon Dent (qui signera chez Mack Sennett un peu plus tard) et se lance dans la mise en scène. En 1919-1920, il apparaît dans une série de vingt-six films en 2 bobines pour Arrow Film Corporation (Morris Shlank) avec Madge Kirby, Vernon Dent et, comme réalisateurs, Tom Gibson, Hank Mann lui-même, puis Fred Windermeier et Herman Raymaker. Il sera alors baptisé en France Bill Bockey ou Bilboquet. Dans les années vingt, il travaille aussi comme scénariste pour Lloyd Hamilton puis, vers 1925-1926, joue en tandem avec Chester Conklin pour la Tennek Film Corporation. Il tourne dans des longs métrages jusqu’en 1959 et apparaît en particulier dans trois films de Chaplin : City Lights (le boxeur), Modern Times (le voisin de cellule) et The Great Dictator (l’ordonnance). En 1947, il devient chef maquilleur à la Warner et finalement termine sa vie en tenant un petit bar en Californie à Sierra Madre. Il meurt le 25 novembre 1971 à l’hôpital de South Pasadena (Californie) à l’âge de 84 ans. Brun, l’œil sombre et même éteint, sous ses épais sourcils, de taille moyenne (1,74 mètre) et plutôt mince, il était surtout reconnaissable par son énorme moustache en balai-brosse et son air de chien battu. Her Man Hero (1919) est un des rares films de Bill Bockey accessibles aux amateurs. Hank y incarne un clochard romantique qui a repéré une jeune femme en détresse à la fenêtre d’un immeuble : il escalade la façade, mais le mari vigilant lui balance un pot de fleur sur l’occiput. Têtu, il pénètre tout de même dans l’appartement qui est gardé par deux Turcs d’opérette. La jeune femme prisonnière (Madge Kirby) fait partie du harem d’un sultan barbu. Hank se déguise en bayadère, fait la danse du ventre, puis, après quelques poursuites où les portes pivotantes et les trappes à bascule jouent un rôle important, la police arrive sur les lieux et délivre le harem tout entier. Hank, assommé dans la bagarre, est réconforté par les douces mains de M. Kirby, mais il se réveille secoué par un policier : ce n’était évidemment qu’un rêve…
