1Alice Clark est née à New York le 5 mai 1888. En 1914, elle débute à la Keystone aux côtés de Chariot après avoir fait du vaudeville avec son mari (le couple « Howell and Smith »), puis en 1915 elle tourne une série en vedette à la L-KO1. En France, on la surnomme alors Lolotte. Au printemps 1917, elle signe avec les frères Stern pour paraître dans des Century et des Howl Comedies sous la direction de John G. Blystone. Elle est alors rebaptisée Totoche en France. En juin 1920, la Century Company déménage à Los Angeles et les films sont distribués par Longacre Distributing Company, puis par Reelcraft. En 1921, Reelcraft a des problèmes financiers et Alice Howell passe chez Universal où elle sera dirigée principalement par William Watson et Richard Smith. Elle abandonne le cinéma vers 1926 et meurt à Los Angeles le 11 avril 1961.

3« Les Américains ont déjà amorcé le genre comique-femme avec une nouvelle série Totoche qui débute cette semaine. Nous y retrouvons les mêmes effets que dans les films de Chariot, joués cette fois par une femme qui a le défaut d’être vulgaire2… »

4Autre jugement sévère, celui de Louis Delluc qui l’appelait « la déplorable Totoche3 ». Cependant, nous nous devons de tenter une réhabilitation d’Alice Howell : ses deux films que nous avons pu voir (One Wet Night, 1924, et Under a Spell, 1925) nous révèlent une avenante jeune femme bien en chair, au visage rond couronné d’une imposante chevelure frisée, qui, sans vulgarité particulière, possède un incontestable tempérament comique. Dans One Wet Night, mariée à Neely Edwards, elle reçoit un couple d’ami ; un fusil que l’on ne croyait pas chargé crève accidentellement une conduite d’eau et le film va développer le thème classique de l’inondation incontrôlable… Dans Under a Spell, elle soupçonne son époux (toujours Neely Edwards) d’avoir une liaison et engage un hypnotiseur pour connaître la vérité ; pour commencer, ce dernier persuade le mari qu’il est un singe, mais l’expérience ne réussit que trop : N. Edwards s’évade dans la nature après avoir assommé le magnétiseur… Alice Howell, la petite bourgeoise aux yeux vifs, se lance avec détermination à la poursuite du mari-gorille aidée de son valet (Bert Roach).

5La sœur d’Alice Howell, Yvonne, fut actrice chez Mack Sennett, et par la suite épousa le réalisateur George Stevens.
