En 1955-1957, les archives de la paroisse latine ont été soumises à un premier classement systématique, revu en 1995. Les documents sont conservés dans des classeurs thématiques et rangés de façon chronologique. Ils sont en latin, en arabe ou en français, parfois en italien.

Les archives paroissiales orthodoxes auraient brûlé en 1923, seul un registre d’inscriptions scolaires échappant à la destruction. Après 1923, les registres de mariages et de baptêmes sont tenus régulièrement en arabe. Par contre, les autres documents antérieurs à 1993 étaient conservés en vrac au moment de notre consultation.

Les archives en turc osmanli du conseil administratif ottoman de Madaba sont déposées au département des archives et des manuscrits à l’Université de Jordanie (Amman). Des fac-similés ou des copies en arabe des documents les plus importants sont conservés par la municipalité actuelle de Madaba. La Bibliothèque nationale (Amman), Département des archives et manuscrits, conserve d’autres documents en arabe (surtout des contrats de location).

Le patriarcat latin est restauré à Jérusalem en 1847 sous l’autorité de la Propagande. Après 1921, il dépend de la Sacrée Congrégation pour les Églises orientales. La prescription de soixante-dix ans s’applique encore largement aux archives de cette dernière. La série SC comprend des documents adressés par le patriarcat latin à la Propagande, en particulier à son préfet.

Malgré nos tentatives répétées, nous n’avons pu accéder aux archives du patriarcat latin de Jérusalem. Par conséquent, nous nous sommes contentés de reprendre les citations faites par le père Médebielle dans ses monographies des paroisses de Kérak, Salt et Madaba.
