Cet ouvrage du grand musicologue allemand Carl Dahlhaus, disparu en 1989, n’a pas été constitué comme tel par son auteur ; son titre même n’est pas de lui. Les différents textes que le musicologue allemand a consacrés à la musique d’Arnold Schoenberg, depuis son premier essai, « Prose musicale » (1964), jusqu’à l’article intitulé « Arnold Schönberg : Drittes Streichquartett, opus 30 » (1988), sont en effet regroupés ici pour la première fois dans leur totalité.

Les spécialistes de Schoenberg connaissaient déjà l’ouvrage allemand paru à Mayence en 1978 sous le titre Schönberg und andere, dans lequel l’éditeur Schott avait recueilli divers textes de Dahlhaus sur le compositeur, ainsi d’ailleurs que quelques-unes de ses principales contributions portant sur la musique du XXe siècle 1. Il existe en réalité de nombreux autres essais consacrés à Schoenberg par Dahlhaus qui méritaient d’être réunis et rendus accessibles au lecteur français.
