A Paleografia e Diplomática consolidou-se como uma disciplina central para o estudo da História e da Filologia. Esta ciência promove uma abordagem mais empírica da História e a sua importância estende-se a áreas como a Codicologia, Onomástica e Genealogia. O estudo da escrita é, por isso, fundamental para a compreensão dos processos históricos.
No entanto, é pertinente questionar a extensão e os limites do estudo da escrita. A análise de detalhes estéticos e cerimoniais deve ser interpretada como um reflexo fiel de processos históricos complexos? A atribuição de um significado simbólico a uma característica gráfica poderá ser uma interpretação objetiva ou uma inferência baseada em pressupostos? A evolução caligráfica pode ser um indicador de tendências sociais?
A exploração destes e de outros problemas evidencia o desafio em correlacionar a forma da escrita com o seu conteúdo histórico. A interpretação de símbolos gráficos e estilísticos pode ter razões práticas, económicas, sociais ou meramente estéticas. Os textos reunidos demonstram que o estudo e a interpretação dos dados devem sempre ter em conta a análise crítica das fontes, sem descurar, assim, o contexto histórico em que se desenvolveram e que lhes confere verdadeiro sentido.
O presente volume convida-nos, pois, a refletir sobre a importância da Paleografia e Diplomática no conhecimento dos processos históricos, para os quais o diálogo interdisciplinar assume também especial relevância.
Palaeography and Diplomatics are now central to History and Philology. This science offers a more empirical approach to History. Its importance reaches into Codicology, Onomastics, and Genealogy. The study of writing is essential to understanding historical processes.
However, we must question the scope and limits of the study of writing. Should we treat aesthetic and ceremonial details as true reflections of complex histories? Is assigning symbolic meaning to graphic features objective or just based on assumptions? Can calligraphy trends show us social shifts?
Exploring these problems shows the challenge of linking writing form to history. Graphic and stylistic symbols can have many reasons – practical, social, economic, or aesthetic. The texts here make clear that the study and interpretation of data must include a critical examination of the sources. We must also remember the context in which they grew, as this gives them true meaning.
This volume therefore, invites us to reflect on the importance of Palaeography and Diplomatics in understanding historical processes, for which interdisciplinary dialogue is also particularly relevant.

Ana Pereira Ferreira is a researcher in the CIDEHUS (Interdisciplinary Centre for History, Culture and Societies - University of Évora, Portugal) and Center for History (Faculty of Arts, University of Lisbon); holds a Degree in History (University of Lisbon, 2007), a master in Palaeography and Diplomatics (University of Lisbon, 2012) and holds a PhD in Medieval History (study of Lisbon Notaries and writing power between 1377-1438, University of Évora). She currently works on medieval studies and studies on the Portuguese presence in the Arabic Gulf.

Leonor Dias Garcia PhD student in History at PIUDHist, with a thesis entitled "Registar por escrito: os notários do Secreto do Santo Ofício português (1536-1755)", under the supervision of Fernanda Olival (CIDEHUS - University of Évora).
Master's degree in Palaeography and Diplomatics from the Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa.
Non-doctoral member of CIDEHUS - University of Évora since 2009.
Participated as a research fellow in several projects funded by FCT, notably the project "Inquirir da Honra: comissários do santo ofício e das Ordens Militares em Portugal (1570-1773)" (FCOMP-01-0124-FEDER-007360) and the project "TraPrInq (Transcrever os processos da Inquisição Portuguesa (1536-1821). A Revolução Digital nos Estudos Inquisitoriais)" (EXPL/HAR-HIS/0499/2021). In the latter, she participated in the creation of the first Portuguese model for the automatic transcription of handwritten documents (Handwritten Text Recognition), now available for public use on the Transkribus platform.
Her main areas of scientific interest are the Portuguese Inquisition, Palaeography and Diplomatics, and Digital Humanities applied to History.

Marcus Dores is a researcher at the Interdisciplinary Centre for History, Cultures and Societies (CIDEHUS) at the University of Évora and member of the UNESCO Chair Intangible Heritage and Traditional Know-How: Linking Heritage. He is a professor in the Philology Department at the Federal University of Bahia (Brazil) and holds a PhD in Philology and Portuguese Language from the University of São Paulo, a Master's degree in Linguistic Studies from the Federal University of Minas Gerais, and a Bachelor's degree in Portuguese Language from the Federal University of Ouro Preto. Since 2019, he has been editor-in-chief of Revista LaborHistórico, a journal published by the Postgraduate Programme in Vernacular Languages at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. He is the coordinator of the project "e-Philology: research and innovation network for experimental studies of Brazilian manuscript documents" (CNPq 443377/2024-3).

Ofélia Sequeira is graduated in History, specialising in Cultural Heritage, from the University of Évora in 2009. She was a research fellow on the project "Inquirir da honra: comissários do Santo Ofício e das Ordens Militares em Portugal (1570-1773)" [Inquiry into honour: commissioners of the Holy Office and Military Orders in Portugal (1570-1773)] between 2009 and 2011. Between 2013 and 2014, she was a research fellow on the project "Money Supply and Credit Market in Pre-Modern Economies". And between 2020 and 2021, she was a research fellow on the project "IRONIC. Challenges of iron gall ink. History and conservation of a cultural heritage at risk". In 2020, she enrolled in a Master's degree in Modern History at the same institution, where she is currently working on her thesis entitled "The production of writing: materialities and financial costs (17th and 18th centuries)".
