Introductory note
Texte intégral
1This volume brings together a set of texts presented at the 2nd edition of the International Congress for Young Researchers in Middle Ages, held at the University of Évora between the 13th and 15th November 2019 under the theme “Space(s)”. At the time the congress took place we were far from knowing how much the world would change just a few months later.
2With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in the first months of 2020, we saw our own spaces reduced. With restrictions on traveling, confined to our homes, many of our assumptions regarding a wide and interconnected space created by globalization were put into question. More than its physical dimension, the importance of the human component and sociability for the conceptions and representations of “space(s)” became evident.
3It is, therefore, wrapped in some irony and with reaffirmed scientific interest that we now publish this second volume of Juvenes dedicated to the theme “Space(s)”. Coincidentally, the texts published in this edition stress the aspects just mentioned. Transversal to all texts, regardless of the chronologies and geographies of analysis, the centrality of Man as the element giving meaning to space is clear. Whether through political, economic, environmental or even cultural mechanisms, the texts gathered in this volume underline the constructed dimension of space, both physical and mentally.
4We also point out that this volume of Juvenes reflects perfectly our main objective from the genesis of ICYRMA – to encourage multidisciplinarity and gather in the same space the science produced by young researchers from various spaces.
5We would like to thank the University of Évora, through the Interdisciplinary Center for History, Cultures and Societies and the Center for the History of Art and Artistic Research, the Évora City Council and the Fundação Eugénio de Almeida for all the support provided for the organization of the II ICYRMA.
6Finally, we want to dedicate this publication to the memory of Prof. Filomena Barros, who always enthusiastically supported this initiative.
