1This work is the result of a close collaboration with Jean-Claude Bessac (CNRS), who has taken part in numerous archaeological missions to both Yemen and Axum. He has contributed all the descriptions having to do with quarrying, stone dressing, masonry stone construction techniques, etc. Section 3.1 and 3.2 of chapter 3, 4.1 and 4.2 of chapter 4, and 8.3 of chapter 8 are due to M. Bessac.
2Thomas Osmond, associate researcher at the French Center for Ethiopian Studies and a fine connoisseur of Ethiopia, patiently reread the entire French text. My warm thanks to him for his advice and numerous suggestions.
3Orin Censler, Professor of Linguistics and Philology at Addis Ababa University, proofsread and polished the English text. I will not quickly forget the hours we spent together at the CFEE, enthusiastically discussing (in a mixture of French and English) the technical terminology of architecture.
