5Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar [1901 (Istanbul)–1962 (Istanbul)]: novelist, poet, and essayist. The son of a judge of Islamic law, Tanpınar spent his youth in different parts of Anatolia, due to his father’s peripatetic career. In 1918, he returned to Istanbul and enrolled in the Faculty of Letters in the School of Sciences (Darülfünun—later Istanbul University). After his graduation in 1923 (the year the Turkish Republic was officially declared), he worked as a high school teacher in different Anat
