The catalogue of the National Museum of Ṣanʽā’ is the fulfilment of a two year project by ʽAbd al-ʽAzīz al-Jandarī, Director of the museum, and Audrey Peli, a French PhD student of Islamic history from the University of Paris 1-Panthéon Sorbonne.
We would like to thank the Social Fund for Development (SFD, Ṣanʽā’) for supporting the publication of this catalogue. It was carried out with the strong support of Jean Lambert (who was, at that time, Director of the Centre Français d’Archéologie et de Sciences Sociales de Sanaa) and Françoise Micheau (Director of the Laboratory Islam médiéval UMR 8167).
We also thank Dr. Lutz Ilisch (University of Tübingen, Germany) for his scientific help and his kind interest to the project and Dr. Florian Téreygeol (CNRS) for the analysis of some coins.
The project was also supported by Rémy Audouin (Archaeologist, UNESCO) and Éric Vallet (Maître de conférence, Université Paris 1-Panthéon Sorbonne). We thank, for their presence and their precious friendship, Ibrāhīm ʽAbd Allāh al-Hādī (Assistant Keeper, Matḥaf al-Waṭanī), Ibrāhīm Muḥammad al-Ḥudayd (Chief Photographer, Matḥaf al-Waṭanī), Ḥanān al-Dālī and Faḥmī Manṣūr (Restorers, Matḥaf al-Waṭanī), Ḫālid al-Aḥmadī (Assistant, Matḥaf al-Waṭanī), Muḥannad al-Sayānī (Director of the Antiquities, Ṣan’ā’), ʽAbd al-Ḥamīd Ḥanīš (Manager of the Museums, Ṣanʽā’) and Fū’ad al-Kašm (Director of the Antiquities, Ibb).
Last but not least, this project would not have been possible without the invaluable presence, help and friendship of Mounir Arbach (Chargé de recherche, CNRS) who initiated this collaboration and strongly supported us every day in our work. We are deeply grateful for his confidence in this project.
