One Century of Censuses in Egypt (1882-1996)

1. Presentation

Texte intégral

1The CD entitled “One Century of Censuses” is the fruit of ten years of institutional cooperation between the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) and the Center for Studies and Economic, Legal and Social Documentation (CEDEJ).

2The CD was the product of the collaboration between the Urban Observatory of Con-temporary Cairo (OUCC) at CEDEJ and the Center for Geographic Information System at CAPMAS.

1.1. The CD in numbers

3Ten years of research (1993-2003), sixty persons directly mobilized in the process. Over 1 million euros invested by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, CNRS and CAPMAS.

4Around 8.5 million statistical data equivalent to the contents of 280 printed volumes. This corresponds to 5000 pages made available on a single means that weighs no more than few grams.

55600 geo-administrative entities that are localized and finely mapped (towns, villages, town districts) along with their administrative hierarchy.

6The first documentation contains a rigorous Latin transliteration of Arabic names of places. Moreover the CD has a historical coding that permits to follow up all the territorial modifications that took place since 1882.

7People in charge of the database “EGIPTE” created in 1993 and that is the source of the CD are François Moriconi-Ebrard, Eric Denis, and Hala Bayoumi.

1.2 Contents of version 1

8Version 1 that is drawn from the EGIPTE GIS, contains the following information and functions:

  1. An administrative index
This gives the status of the real administrative situation of the territory at the time of each census: the hierarchical level, name, the status (markaz, qism, etc.) and the geo-graphic localization.

  2. A geographic index
This permits the user to localize any territorial entity at the time 1996 census, to visual-ize its limits and spatial extension.

  3. A demographic index
The Data Search Interface gives an easy access to the results of all the censuses, as well as to variables at all hierarchical levels due to the Data Search Interface.

  4. A utility for thematic map (only for 1996)
The user can create his/her own maps and databases thanks to the Map Interface Function.

1.3 Perspectives

9This product is the first in a series of publications that aims to provide an immediate access to information that was before scattered and not always accessible. It will be completed by new versions, in particular:

  1. A historic dictionary, to update the work The Geographic Dictionary of Egypt since the Ancient Egyptians until 1945, Mohammed Ramzy.
This update will be based on counting and archiving documents concerning the creation of new units, partitioning and merging units.

  2. The habits and housing data (1976, 1986 and 1996).

  3. Updates related to the 2006 census.

  4. New function authorizing cross queries.

10Those developments will be the focus of new publications that will be announced on the CEDEJ web site (http://www.cedej-eg.org).
