1This essay begins with a rather simple premise: Given that modern Italy is a nation of migrants and given the strong impact of consumer culture and popular media, studying aspects of that culture with respect to Italian migration could help elaborate a more nuanced understanding of Italian ethnicity broadly understood. Beyond this rather facile observation this essay focuses on the history of Italian immigration to the United States and the complex relationship Italian Americans have to mediated representations, concentrating mainly on film, with gestures to other kinds of media. I consider briefly the historical development and the on-going role of stereotypes about Italian Americans and I reflect on where and how we might look for alternative media narratives about Italian ethnicity in the United States, concluding with a sustained analysis of two cinemati
