1In 1918, ten years after the colonial conquest, a list of 41 Headmen was drawn up for the Tigania-Igembe, rather faithfully representing the territorial organization of the old regime. Each Headman was at the head of a territorial section made up of three subsections—occasionally two subsections—that often took up the names of colors, signaled by an asterisk (*). When the territorial subsections numbered more than three or four, this likely corresponded to localities that were grouped together under the leadership of one Headman. The transcription of proper names by the administrator, while rudimentary, was maintained. This list of sections corresponds to a population that we can reasonably estimate to include about 90,000 inhabitants (see Ch. 11). Given that the list accounts for 145 territorial subsections, each one included approximately 620 inhabitants. In 1989, the population of Tigania-Igembe was at 456,105 inhabitants, a number that, divided among the 145 subsections, estimates an average of 3200 for each subsection, a rough estimate that corresponds to Athiru Gaitî’s data (see fig. 15, pp. 122-123). The three main sites of study have been underlined.
