Female Protomes from Chaeroneia (Boeotia)

An assemblage of protomes was unearthed with a few other figurines, as well as figured and glazed pottery, at Chaeroneia in 1993 (fig. 1). This paper presents the protomes in their archaeological context focusing on their dating, distinct style, and use in the mortuary record. It highlights the problems surrounding their study by revisiting the scholarly theories put forth to explain these widely diffused terracotta artefacts, surveys their presence and role in Boeotia, and contemplates their use and function in secular and sacred, but especially funerary, contexts in order to gain a better understanding of their meaning.1
