The Republican traditional song repertoire represents the living memory of the Republican cause. The songs tell the history of their struggle. They recount the victories and the defeats, celebrate the heroes and the martyrs, and condemn the enemies. Throughout this repertoire, weapons are present. From the old pike of the 19th century to the missile imported from Libya in the 1980s, weapons were the tools of the struggle on which the victory of the IRA depended. More than mere instruments, Republican weapons have become the very symbol of the struggle.

This availability, added to the natural propensity of man for this art, makes music a precious propaganda tool. Music can represent the living memory of a community. It can also represent the living memory of a people’s struggle. The Irish Republican movement has its own repertoire of songs, relating the movement’s history, in particular its rebellions, victories and defeats. Arms hold an important place in these songs and have become a symbol of this movement.
