Abstract

Abstract
Within the Tairona goldwork, located in the north of Colombia, there is a group of pieces designed as birds with extended wings. In the goldwork collection of the Museo del Oro in Colombia, there is an important number of objects classified as such. In this article we present the results of the chemical and metallographic analyses of a group of pendants and breastplates representative of these birds; the composition of the alloy, the predominant elaboration techniques and the different methods used for the finishing of these objects were studied. Comparative analysis carried out among different fragments of the pieces allowed, also, reconstructing the stages of their manufacture.

Introducción

En la orfebrería prehispánica colombiana las aves fueron los animales más representados, principalmente, con alas abiertas y cola desplegada (Reichel - Dolmatof 1998). En el territorio colombiano, se conocen hallazgos de este tipo de objetos en las regiones de Urabá, llanuras del Caribe, valle medio del río Cauca, y especialmente en la Cordillera Oriental en el territorio Muisca y en la Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, región Tairona (Sáenz 2001).

La colección de orfebrería del Museo del Oro del Banco de la República está compuesta por más de 33.900 piezas, de las cuales cerca de 9.500 son adornos catalogados como Tairona. En esta muestra, la más numerosa de la colección ya que representa el 30% de ella, hay 280 de estas piezas que corresponden a colgantes y pectorales en forma de ave de alas abiertas y cola desplegada, destacándose por su gran cantidad y por la variedad en la representación de sus diseños.
