Abstract

Abstract
Archaeological excavations and the studies of pottery and goldwork have evidenced the presence of two periods, known as Early and Late, among the agricultural, ceramic and gold working societies of the Middle Cauca region, in the center of the Colombian Andean region. The evidences have shown that important cultural changes occurred between the two periods: an increase in population, larger economic production, the use of new funerary practices, deep transformations in the cultural materials and the substitution of the symbols. Some investigators have related these changes with modifications in the foundations of the power of the leaders: from an ideological support to one of economic character. The analysis of the goldwork and of other sources of data like the ethnohistory, contradict this hypothesis and suggests a continuity in the ideological basis of the power: the use of objects of prestige loaded with symbolism like goldwork, the handling of practices and ideas related with shamanism and control over temples filled with “idols”, among others.
