Enviado por el Museo de Historia Natural de París, a la edadde 23 años, el joven naturalista francés Alcide d'Orbigny recorriódurante ocho años la América meridonal (Brasil, Argentina,Paraguay, Uruguay, Chile, Perú y Bolivia) y a su regreso a Francia compuso una monumental obra publicada entre 1835 y 1847 con el título de Voyage dans l'Amérique Méridionale en nuevetomos y 11 volúmenes con más de 5 mil paginas y 500 ilustraciones.
