'SOME TIME ago, among other papers pertaining to the Bauhaus period, I found a diary that my wife kept from 1923 to 1928 and that we had not looked at since. I began to read and the further I went the more depressed I became, for it became clear from the text that about 90 per cent of the unprecedented efforts made by all participants in this undertaking went into countering national and local hostility, and only 10 per cent remained for actual creative work,' wrote Gropius shortly before his death.1 These struggles, as Gropius so clearly noted in hindsight, no matter how passionate and romantic they had been at the outset, also brought about, beside the visible end-results of moral victory and practical failure, the slow and steady erosion of energies.

In Dessau, Gropius composed a new programme for the new life of the new institute among new circumstances, but, in line with the lower case outlook that now affected his thinking, he no longer called it a manifesto, not even a program...
